On August 7, 2022, I traversed the Cushman 6. Link to FKT. Across the valley from Cub Peak was a beautiful, jagged ridge. My interest piqued, I did some research and learned that Mount Cruiser was a popular summit, and it looked fun. I looked it up on YouTube –it’s rated “4th–5th class.” ‘This might be too dangerous,’ I thought. Still the adventure is in going, trying, and finding out—whether I make it or not.
The first mile of this trail is along the “Staircase Rapids,” of the North Fork Skokomish River, highlighting the lush fern-covered valley, towering cedar trees, and the boulder-strewn riverbed. Afterward, the trail ascends through six miles of old-growth forest, gradually climbing 4,500 feet. I soaked in the tranquility of nature’s song as I strode up the path, grounding myself in the peaceful surroundings. Eventually, I transitioned to earbuds, found my rhythm, and followed the clear signs to Flapjack Lakes and Gladys Divide, eager for the mountain views that awaited ahead.
Soon after Flapjack Lakes (which has a toilet) the tree line begins to break up and the rugged peaks reveal themselves.
